According to research, the earth and other planets were born as a result of a massive explosion about 4.6 billion years ago. At that time, the earth was like a ball of fire, which gradually cooled down and then life originated here. Now the question is, where did the most important oxygen and water for life come from? The US space agency NASA said in its research that billions of years ago, space rocks used to collide with the earth in large numbers and continuously. These rocks were nothing but asteroids and comets. These asteroids and comets created the atmosphere on earth and filled it with oxygen.

According to the report, when the earth was formed about 4.6 billion years ago, there was no atmosphere in it. As the earth cooled down, the atmosphere started forming. But initially this atmosphere mainly contained carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas.

Oxygen on Earth

Today, humans and animals need oxygen and water for life. But earlier there was no oxygen on earth. There was only carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas. Thousands of years ago, suddenly a big change took place on earth and the entire chemistry changed. Due to this, the amount of oxygen here increased significantly. In science, we call this entire process Great Oxidation Event (GOE).

According to the report, 2.5 to 4 billion years ago, there was a rain of asteroids and comets on the earth. Some of these rocks were up to 10 km in size. These rocks initially affected the chemistry of the earth’s surface and the origin of oxygen began.

Earth had no atmosphere 

According to research conducted under the leadership of Nadja Drabon, Assistant Professor of Earth and Planetary Science at Harvard University, these asteroids and comets rained at a much faster rate than we thought. Let us tell you that oxygen is necessary for any living being. If there is no oxygen in the atmosphere, the whole world will be destroyed.
